The castle of Bourtzi is located in the middle of the harbor of Nafplio. The Venetians completed its fortification in 1473 to protect the city from pirates and invaders from the sea. The Greeks regained it from the Turks on June 18, 1822, from where they assisted in the siege of Nafplio. Until 1865 it served as a fortress. It was then transformed into residence of the executioners of convicts from the castle of Palamidi.

The town was the capital of the First Hellenic Republic, from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. Nafplio is now the capital of the regional unit of Argolis in Peloponnese, Greece

t is the end of the day and my six month journey of Europe has come to an end. Here, the boat is me. Tired but basking in the evening fall sunlight that coastal Greece bestows upon me once more. Behind me, the prison which is the life I left behind, and the life to which I must return.

This is Christos. I met him in the town of Epidaurus in Peloponnese/Greece. Christos is 52 years old, works as a fisherman in the 5th generation. He is going out to the Mediterranean Sea with his boat for around 40 years, fishing 363 days a year – only leaving his ship in the harbour on christmas and easter. We started before dusk in his small fishing boat. When I took this picture he was reeling in the fishing line, smoking one of the cigarettes, his wife rolls every day for him, before his departure.
